Why Exchange?

More Than a School Year

A J-1 exchange year is one of the most transformative experiences of a young person's life — academically, personally, and globally.

🗣️

Language Immersion

Total immersion in an English-speaking environment accelerates language skills faster than any classroom. You'll think, dream, and laugh in English within months.

🌎

Global Perspective

Living abroad reshapes how you see the world. Students return home with broader views, stronger critical thinking, and the confidence to navigate any cultural setting.

🎓

College Advantage

Exchange experience stands out on college applications worldwide. Admissions officers recognize the maturity, independence, and initiative it represents.

👨‍👩‍👧

A Second Family

Your host family becomes a lifelong connection. Most exchange alumni stay in touch with their host families for decades — relationships that span generations.

💼

Career Edge

Employers actively seek globally minded candidates. The cross-cultural competence and adaptability you develop are skills no textbook can teach.

🧠

Personal Growth

Navigating a new country, school, and family builds real independence. You'll discover capabilities you never knew you had — and return home a different person.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the J-1 exchange student program?
The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is authorized by the U.S. Department of State under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act. It allows international high school students to live with an American host family, attend a local high school, and experience U.S. culture for a semester or full academic year.
Do I need to speak English fluently to apply?
You need conversational English to participate — you don't need to be fluent, but you should be able to communicate in everyday situations. Most students find their English improves dramatically within the first few months of immersion.
How are host families selected?
All host families go through a thorough screening process including background checks, home interviews, and reference verification. Our local coordinators personally visit every host home before a student is placed. Families are volunteers who genuinely want to share their home and culture.
What if I have problems with my host family or school?
Your local coordinator is your primary contact for any issues. They conduct monthly check-ins and are available 24/7 for emergencies. If a host family situation doesn't work out, we will find you a new placement. Student welfare is our top priority.
Can I choose where in the U.S. I'll be placed?
You can indicate regional preferences, but final placement depends on available host families. We work with host families across many states and do our best to accommodate preferences while ensuring the best possible match for you and your host family.
Will my credits from the U.S. transfer back to my home country?
Credit transfer policies vary by country and institution. We provide official transcripts and documentation. Most students' home schools recognize exchange year credits, but we recommend confirming with your home school before your departure.
